Exciting Summer Activities for Seniors in Connecticut

Looking for a fun Connecticut activity to enjoy with your elderly loved one this summer? Or trying to find a place that your elderly parent can visit every day? Here are a few Connecticut senior activities to consider this season.

Senior Center Activities

Lapham Community Center and Senior Center of New Canaan, Inc.

At the Senior Center of New Canaan, Inc, there are a number of activities and services for you to enjoy. There is free Medicare screening offered, as well as AARP Driver Safety classes. You can also get your hearing tested, take a gentle yoga class, or enjoy some craft time. If you love to play cards, there’s time to play bridge and other games. This is an active senior center, offering plenty of screenings and information for seniors living out in the community. There’s even talks in the evening, such as the July 12 Rogers and Hammerstein Era discussion involving musical examples from the era. This is a welcoming environment, and a great addition to the community for seniors.

Darien Senior Center

The Darien Senior Center offers hot lunch prepared by a chef every day for five dollars, as well as consistent programming throughout the week. The goal of the Darien Senior Center is to nurture the lives of those individuals 55 and older living in the community. There is always free coffee and donuts offered to those who visit the center. There are even opportunities to ask a lawyer or a social worker any questions you may have to ensure your own safety at home or in the community. The Darien Senior Center works hard to collaborate with outside agencies to take care of all the needs of seniors in the area and provide a safe, fun environment in which to meet. There is a writing class, discussion groups, exercise classes, movie showings and more throughout each week, making it possible for seniors in the area to stay active. Fairfield Family Care can provide transportation to this center and a companion to help buffer social anxiety, if new to the center.

Stamford Senior Center

The Stamford Senior Center offers a full schedule of weekly programming that includes Zumba classes, Line dancing, Tai Chi, strength training and even line dancing. The center also offers a lunch program for those seniors 60 and older, offering a reduced lunch for a suggested donation of $4. You can also enjoy a card game, or learn how to play MahJong at the center. Movies are shown every Friday at 2:30 PM, and on Wednesdays you can bring your smart phone, tablet or laptop in to learn more about using your device and problem solving. The center also offers overnight trips, as well as day trips in the community. There is plenty to do at the Stamford Senior Center, and it’s worth taking a visit to the area.

Take a Stroll in Nature

The Audubon Center in nearby Greenwich has plenty of walking trails in the 295-acre sanctuary. Take a walk along the lake, stonewalls, and old homestead buildings. Visit the Kimberlin Nature Education Center, and view the variety of exhibits they have to offer. In particular, there’s a honeybee hive exhibit that is of particular interest to many visitors.

Trip to the Theater

The Fairfield Theater Company is a venue that offers shows for all types of individuals. They offer concerts, workshops, films and more, so it’s good to be on the lookout to see what the Fairfield Theater Company has on their upcoming schedule.
